Competitor tracking

What is Competitor tracking?

Competitor tracking in AEO means recording rivals' mentions and citations on the same prompt panel, in the same scans, as your own. Done properly it includes alias matching, so rebrands, abbreviations and misspellings still count, and new-rival detection, flagging names the engines have started recommending that you have never tracked.

In practice

Why it matters for AI visibility

Your AI visibility only means something relative to who else is winning the same answers, and the engines' idea of your competition is routinely different from yours. Assistants recommend businesses by reading the web's sources, so they surface rivals you dismiss, omit ones you obsess over, and occasionally hand answer space to entrants no incumbent has noticed. Tracking rivals on identical prompts turns all of this into usable intelligence: which sources earn them their mentions, which questions they own that you should contest, and whether their share is growing at your expense. New-rival detection doubles as an early-warning system, catching both genuine competitors while they are still small and brand hijacks, lookalike names riding your reputation in answers. The unglamorous detail that makes it trustworthy is alias matching: engines are careless with names, and counting only exact matches quietly undercounts everyone, rivals included.
