Cards on the table
One of the six tools below is ours, so read our verdicts knowing that. We have done what we would want any roundup to do about it: every factual claim carries the date we checked it and a link to the vendor’s own page, our own tool’s weaknesses are listed in the same table column as everyone else’s, and where rival roundups disagree with each other we say so rather than picking the version that suits us.
Six free checks compared. None requires a card. Three run with no gate at all (Am I Visible on AI, Ahrefs, Semrush). Three ask the engines live questions rather than reading a stored index or the model's memory (AEOscore, SUSO, HubSpot). Two include Claude (AEOscore, SUSO). One phrases its prompts the way UK buyers ask (AEOscore).

Tool by tool
Honest verdicts, ours included
AEOscore free AEO scoreours
The only free check on this list that is run from the UK, covers all six engines including Claude, and is read by a person before it is sent.
Where it is weaker: Slower than the instant tools: the report is checked by a human and arrives in 1 to 2 working days, and it is a one-off snapshot, not a trend line.
Free, no card · Human-checked, 1 to 2 working days · ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode · Cheapest paid: £99 a month (Monitor)
HubSpot AI Search Grader
The fastest way to a shareable score and sentiment read; a good first snapshot if you accept the follow-up emails.
Where it is weaker: Reads what the models already believe about your brand rather than tracking live citations, skips Claude and both of Google's AI search surfaces, and the follow-up email sequence is real.
Free, form-gated · Instant, under two minutes · ChatGPT (GPT-5.4 mini), Gemini, Perplexity · Cheapest paid: $50 a month (HubSpot AEO, in beta, 25 prompts)
SUSO Digital AI Search Visibility Checker
The most thorough instant-ish free scan: live queries, sentiment, citations and a PDF export, and the only other free check here that includes Claude.
Where it is weaker: A one-time scan with no re-run history, no Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no UK localisation of the prompts.
Free, email-gated · About five minutes, emailed · ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity · Cheapest paid: None: it fronts a quote-based agency, not a tool tier
Am I Visible on AI
A genuinely free, zero-gate technical check of whether AI crawlers can read your site at all: useful, and honest about being exactly that.
Where it is weaker: It does not run a single prompt, so a perfect score does not mean any engine mentions you. The two big roundups even disagree about what it is: SUSO calls it fully free, ScopeSite calls it a paid teaser. On the day we checked, it was fully free with no paid tier on the site.
Fully free, no gate · Instant, about 30 seconds · Checks crawler access for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Bing and others: not answers · Cheapest paid: None found: the site has no pricing page (checked 20 August 2026)
Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker (Brand Radar)
The broadest engine list in one free click and the easiest way to peek at a competitor's AI presence.
Where it is weaker: The chatbot data is up to a month old, Claude has no index at all, and the paid pricing is layered enough (£99 plan, then $199 to $699 index add-ons) that you should get your total in writing.
Free snapshot, no gate · Instant · ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode (no Claude index) · Cheapest paid: Ahrefs Lite £99 a month; browsable AI answer indexes from $199 a month on top
Semrush free AI Search Visibility Checker
A quick, ungated second opinion if you want a database-driven read alongside a live one.
Where it is weaker: Three uses a day, no Perplexity or Claude, and it reads a stored database rather than asking the engines live, so it can lag what the engines say today.
Free, capped at 3 uses a day · Instant · ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode (no Perplexity, no Claude) · Cheapest paid: $99 a month (AI Visibility Toolkit)
Original data
How much AI answers change between days: our study
We re-ran the same 41 UK buyer prompts on our own site through 5 AI engines on three consecutive days (18 to 20 August 2026): the brands named changed in 81% of prompt-and-engine combinations, and in 7% whether we were mentioned at all flipped between days.
Across all three UK sites we monitor (482 prompt-and-engine combinations over the six engines, each re-run on three separate days in August 2026), the list of brands named changed at least once in 83% of combinations, and the mentioned-or-not answer flipped in 14%. This is why every verdict on this page treats a free check as a smoke alarm, not a measurement: it tells you whether you have a problem, never precisely how big it is, and no single run of any tool here, ours included, escapes that.
Method: we took every prompt-and-engine combination with a scored answer on each of three separate days, compared the brands each answer named, and counted a combination as changed if any day's list differed. Measured from the AEOscore scan database on 20 August 2026.
“Ask an engine the same buyer question on Monday and again on Wednesday and you will often get a different shortlist. The variance comes from the engines themselves: generated answers genuinely differ run to run. A free check tells you whether you have a problem, not the exact size of it.”
The gap
What free tools miss and when to pay
A free check is one snapshot; paid monitoring re-runs the same buyer prompts on a schedule so you can see movement, and AEOscore's Monitor tier does this weekly at £99 a month, daily on the £1,495 Monitor + Strategist tier.
Every free check here has the same three blind spots: none shows a trend, though movement is the thing worth managing; none tracks who wins your prompts week after week the way a paid tracker does; and most report absence and stop. Most cannot: they report absence without a remedy, whereas AEOscore's free report includes one concrete fix to start with, and the paid tiers have in-house technical people who make the fixes rather than emailing you a to-do list.
“A tracker's report ends at the bad news. Between knowing ChatGPT skips you and changing it sits a technical job: answer blocks, new pages, llms.txt, mentions on sites you do not own. A free checker will show you the gap; closing it is that technical job.”
Where the paid tiers actually start, checked 20 August 2026:
- Otterly.ai: Lite is $29 a month with 15 prompts and four base engines; Claude is an add-on from $29 a month more. UK prompt localisation confirmed.
- Peec AI: Starter is €85 a month with 50 prompts; every self-serve tier picks 3 of 6 engines, and Claude is Enterprise-only.
- Profound: Starter is $99 a month billed yearly, and it tracks ChatGPT only; Claude arrives on the Enterprise tier.
- Semrush: The AI Visibility Toolkit starts at $99 a month; no Claude in the standard toolkit.
- Ahrefs: Custom AI prompt tracking needs at least Lite at £99 a month; the browsable AI answer indexes are $199 to $699 a month on top.
- AEOscore: Monitor is £99 a month: all six engines including Claude, flat, UK-phrased prompts, weekly scans, and a written fix plan for every gap.
AEOscore’s pricing in one line: £395 one-off AI Visibility Audit, credited against your first month, £99 a month Monitor, £1,495 a month Monitor + Strategist. Prices in pounds, excluding VAT. Full detail on the pricing page, and deeper paid-tool comparisons in our compare hub.
Localisation
Why UK buyers should care about prompt phrasing
Most trackers are US-built and priced in dollars; AEOscore is built and run in the UK by Goreblimey Ltd in Cheltenham, prices in pounds excluding VAT, and phrases its buyer prompts the way UK buyers ask.
AI engines answer the question they are given, and UK buyers phrase questions differently: builder not general contractor, solicitor not attorney, estate agent not realtor, prices in pounds with VAT. A prompt panel worded for the US market measures visibility in answers your buyers will never see. Among the free checks compared here, only ours phrases prompts the way UK buyers ask; among the paid tools, Otterly and Semrush confirm UK targeting on their own pages, and the rest either localise by generic country setting or do not say.
The stakes are UK-specific too: 69.5% of UK Google searches now end without a click, the highest rate of any country SparkToro studied (Similarweb clickstream, January to April 2026), 54% of UK adults use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini (Ofcom, April 2026), and Seer Interactive’s April 2026 update found brands cited in an AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands, with Seer’s own caveat that correlation is not proven causation. Sources below, with dates.
“Ask the engines for a general contractor and you get American directories; ask for a builder and you get UK trade bodies and .co.uk roundups. If your buyers ask in British English, a US-worded prompt panel is measuring someone else's market.”
Direct answers
Free checker questions, answered in one sentence
Is there a free tool to check if ChatGPT and Perplexity mention my brand?
Yes: AEOscore runs a free UK AI visibility check across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no card and no account, and emails a human-checked score out of 100 within 1 to 2 working days.
What are the best free AI visibility checkers for UK businesses?
The realistic free options are AEOscore's free AEO score (UK-run, human-checked, all six engines), HubSpot's AI Search Grader (instant, form-gated), SUSO Digital's AI Search Visibility Checker (email-gated, live queries including Claude), Ahrefs' free AI Visibility Checker (instant, index-based, no Claude), Semrush's free checker (three uses a day, database-based) and Am I Visible on AI (fully free, technical accessibility only).
Are free AI visibility checkers accurate?
They are directionally useful but not repeatable: when we re-ran the same buyer prompts through the same engines on three separate days, the brands named changed in 83% of prompt-and-engine combinations, which is why a free check tells you whether you have a problem, not how big it is.
What is the difference between a free check and paid AI visibility monitoring?
A free check is one snapshot; paid monitoring re-runs the same buyer prompts on a schedule so you can see movement, and AEOscore's Monitor tier does this weekly at £99 a month, daily on the £1,495 Monitor + Strategist tier.
Do I need to give a card or sign up to use AEOscore's free check?
No: you give a domain and an email address, and one person emails one report back, with no card, no account and no automated drip sequence.
Are there UK-based AI visibility tools, or are they all American?
Most trackers are US-built and priced in dollars; AEOscore is built and run in the UK by Goreblimey Ltd in Cheltenham, prices in pounds excluding VAT, and phrases its buyer prompts the way UK buyers ask.
Which AI engines should a visibility check cover?
A useful check covers at least ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, because several trackers gate Claude, Gemini or Google's AI surfaces behind higher tiers or skip them entirely.
What does an AI visibility score out of 100 mean?
It is the share of your tested buyer prompts where an engine mentioned you, weighted so small samples cannot masquerade as certainty and tracked alongside how prominently you appear, so it is comparable to your own past scores and to a named rival, not an absolute industry benchmark.
Can a free tool tell me how to fix the gaps?
Most cannot: they report absence without a remedy, whereas AEOscore's free report includes one concrete fix to start with, and the paid tiers have in-house technical people who make the fixes rather than emailing you a to-do list.
Method
How we compared them
Every gate, sign-up requirement, engine list and price on this page was checked on the vendor’s own pages on 20 August 2026; each tool’s name links to the page we checked. We did not rely on any tool’s marketing claims where its own documentation said otherwise, and where the two most-cited rival roundups contradict each other (SUSO Digital calls Am I Visible on AI fully free, ScopeSite calls it a paid teaser) we checked the vendor site on the same day and reported what was actually there: no pricing page at all.
The variance figures are our own: measured from the AEOscore scan database, which stores every answer the six engines give to every prompt we monitor, so the day-to-day comparison uses real stored answers rather than a one-off experiment. Verdicts weigh what a small UK business gets before paying: friction, engine coverage, live testing, UK phrasing and whether the result leads anywhere.
Prices are rechecked quarterly; next check due November 2026. Spotted something a vendor changed? Tell us and we will correct it with a dated note.
