Being first-named in an AI answer is worth far more than being present, because of how people read conversational replies: the first recommendation frames the comparison, and later names get judged against it. Some engines also present a lead recommendation with reasons, followed by alternatives in a terser list, an even steeper prominence gradient than a results page. Tracking position separately from mentions catches movements that mention counting misses entirely: you can hold your mention rate steady for months while quietly sliding from first pick to afterthought as a rival's coverage improves, a decline invisible until enquiries drop. Position is also where description quality bites: engines give their lead pick the fullest, warmest sentence. Watching what the engines say about whoever occupies first position for your key prompts tells you precisely what evidence they are rewarding, and therefore what yours is missing.
