How long does AEO take? When AI answers change after you fix schema and content gaps

By Olly, founder of AEOscore, AEO consultant and full-stack developer, 20+ years in search12 min read

Plan on 4 to 12 weeks from a fix going live to AI mentions you can rely on. Engines that search the web while answering, such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity, can pick up a fix within days on a narrow question. On broad questions, repeat mentions usually take 8 to 12 weeks or longer.

TL;DR

  • Judge a fix at week eight and give it until week twelve before deciding it did not work.
  • Live-search engines move first: on our own site ChatGPT named us within a day of one fix and Perplexity within five days of another. Google AI Overviews took four weeks; AI Mode has not moved yet.
  • Narrow, specific questions move in days. Broad questions with a settled answer move slowly, and one new page rarely shifts them on its own.

The timeline

How long does it take for AI answers to change after you fix things?

How long does it take to improve brand mentions in AI answers after fixing schema and content gaps?

Most businesses see the first movement in AI answers 4 to 12 weeks after the fixes go live, with early signals on live-search engines such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity within days to 4 weeks, and repeatable mentions on broad questions typically taking 8 to 12 weeks or longer.

The wait comes in four phases, and each has something you can measure. The phases come from our own weekly scans. We have not found a published, controlled measurement of how long content changes take to reach AI answers, so we log our own.

WhenWhat is happeningWhat you can measureWhat typically moves
Days 1 to 14Crawlers find and re-read the changed page. Search indexes update. Nothing is guaranteed yet.AI crawler visits in your server logs, the page indexed in Google and Bing, robots.txt allowing the search bots.On narrow questions with little competition, live-search engines can name you within days. Broad questions: usually nothing yet.
Weeks 3 to 6Live-search engines start retrieving the new page when the question is asked.Your page cited as a source, sometimes before your brand is named in the answer text.ChatGPT search and Perplexity first, then Gemini. Google AI Overviews can start to appear from around week four.
Weeks 6 to 12Enough independent sources agree about you for the engines to repeat it.Mention rate across weekly scans.Repeat mentions across several engines if the page and the third-party sources back each other up. Judge the fix here.
Months 3 to 6Third-party mentions build up. New model versions are trained and released.Share of voice against rivals, and whether training-data answers now include you.Broad category questions and answers drawn from training data, which move last.
The short version of this page is quick tip 22: publish, wait, re-ask.

Per engine

Which AI engines update fastest after a fix?

Engines that search the web while answering, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT with search, reflect changes fastest, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode follow Google's slower crawl and index cycle, and answers drawn from a model's training data can lag by months or a whole model release.

Each engine finds your changes a different way, so each moves on its own clock. The official documentation only gives timings for robots.txt changes and for Google’s crawling, so the last column is what we saw on our own site, for fixes shipped 17 to 24 August and tracked to 21 September 2026.

EngineHow it finds your changesOfficial guidanceWhat we saw
ChatGPTSearches the web for some questions, using OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and third-party search providers such as Bing; answers the rest from what the model already knows.OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search features. It gives no timing for content changes. (OpenAI)First mention within a day of one fix. Named in 17 of 104 answers after the fixes.
PerplexitySearches the web to answer, using the index its PerplexityBot crawler builds.Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to show. It gives no timing for content changes. (Perplexity)First mention 5 days after a fix, then named in most weekly scans. 10 of 104 answers.
GeminiCan ground its answers in Google Search results.Google gives no Gemini-specific timing. It says Search crawling takes anywhere from several days to several months. (Google Search Central)Named once, 6 days after a fix, not repeated. 1 of 88 answers.
Google AI OverviewsBuilt from Google's search index. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be used.Google says there are no extra requirements beyond normal Search eligibility, and that crawling takes several days to several months. (Google Search Central)First mention after 27 days. 2 of 103 answers.
Google AI ModeBuilt from Google's search index. Like AI Overviews, it may run several related searches per question (Google calls this query fan-out).Same eligibility rules as AI Overviews. (Google Search Central)Not named in any of 104 answers in the first five weeks.

ChatGPT only searches the web for some questions. Semrush’s US clickstream data found it switched web search on for 34.5% of queries in February 2026 (Semrush); the rest are answered without a search, from what the model already knows, which moves on model-release timescales rather than weeks.

What we measured on our own site

Fix-to-mention log, aeoscore.co.uk

We shipped 8 fixes on our own site from 17 to 24 August 2026, each aimed at one buyer question we track, and followed every one through our weekly scans to 21 September 2026. On the 5 questions we had scanned before their fix, we had been named in 0 of 115 answers. After the fixes, ChatGPT named us in 16% of answers on these questions and Perplexity in 10%. The fastest first mention came in the first scan after the fix went live.

The two fixes that turned into repeat mentions answered narrow questions few other pages answer: a UK comparison of Profound alternatives, and a diagnostic for one specific paid search symptom. The three that have not moved yet answer broad questions, such as “what is answer engine optimisation?”, where large publishers and established vendors already own the answer.

This is one site, our own, over five weeks. A site with more competition should expect the slower end of each range. We update it monthly as the log grows, and each update is dated in the change log at the foot of this page.

A new page can change what an engine reads within days. Changing what it believes takes as many sources as it took to form the old view.

The mechanism

Why does it take weeks rather than days?

AI engines have to re-crawl your pages, re-index them, and then see your brand described the same way across enough independent sources before they will repeat it, and each of those steps runs on a schedule you do not control.

Why crawling and re-indexing set the floor (days 1 to 14)

Nothing changes in an answer until a crawler has read the new version of your page. OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes reach their search systems within about 24 hours (OpenAI, Perplexity); Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and several months in some cases (Google recrawl guide, Google AI features guide). AI crawlers also waste a lot of their visits: in Vercel and MERJ’s December 2024 analysis, ChatGPT spent 34.82% of its fetches on pages that returned a 404, and none of the major AI crawlers except Gemini, which runs on Googlebot, rendered JavaScript (Vercel and MERJ). Content that only appears after scripts run is invisible to them. More on the crawlers in the glossary under AI crawler.

Why retrieval-based engines move before training-based ones

Engines that search the web while answering can use your new page the next time the question is asked. Answers drawn from a model’s training data cannot: they only change when the provider trains and releases a new model. On our own site, every first mention came from an engine that searches the web while answering.

Why do third-party mentions take the longest?

Because the engines repeat what many independent sources agree on, and getting reviews, listings and articles on other people's sites takes weeks of outreach and publishing that you cannot rush.

Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, published in May 2025, found branded web mentions correlated with visibility in Google AI Overviews at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs). The difference between a brand mention and a citation is explained in the glossary, along with citation rate.

What changes the speed

What makes it faster, and what makes it slower

A narrow, specific question with few competing pages, a page that answers it in the first sentence in plain HTML, crawlers allowed in robots.txt, and the same description of your business on the sites the engines already cite.

Faster

  • A narrow question with few pages competing to answer it
  • The answer in the first sentence under a heading that matches the question
  • Content in the initial HTML, so crawlers that do not run JavaScript can read it
  • Search crawlers allowed in robots.txt and no firewall blocking them
  • The page linked from pages the engines already cite, including your own
  • The fix shipped this week

Slower

  • A broad question where big publishers already own the answer
  • Rivals publishing something stronger in the same weeks
  • Your name and description differing between your site and third-party profiles
  • Content that only appears after JavaScript runs
  • Dead links and stale sitemaps, which waste crawler visits
  • Answers drawn from training data, which change only with a new model release

The format of the page helps too. The Princeton GEO study, peer-reviewed at KDD 2024, found that methods such as adding citations, quotations and statistics lifted visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al.). That affects how much of the page gets used, not how soon it is read.

A fix waiting in a backlog hasn't started its four to twelve weeks yet.

Before the mentions

How to tell whether it is working before the mentions arrive

Track leading signs weekly: AI crawler visits in your server logs, your pages cited as sources even when your brand is not named, and whether the engines describe your business more accurately than before.

AI crawlers are visiting the changed page

Look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot in your server logs. Analytics tools that run JavaScript cannot see them.

Your page is cited, even if your brand is not named

The engines often use a page as a source before they recommend the business behind it.

The description of your business gets more accurate

Wrong prices, old services or a confused category fading from answers means the engines are reading the new version.

You appear in the sources list on live-search engines

Perplexity and ChatGPT search show their sources. Being listed there is the step before being named in the text.

When we asked one buyer question 20 times each on ChatGPT and Gemini, no two of the 40 answers named the same set of brands (AEOscore). A single answer tells you almost nothing; the share of weekly answers that name you tells you whether the fix worked.

One mention is a coin toss. A mention you see in most weekly scans is a result.

Schema

Does fixing schema markup speed up AI mentions?

No. Schema markup helps machines parse your pages correctly, but we have seen no good evidence that it raises AI citations or mentions, so schema work on its own will not speed anything up.

Ship schema anyway: it helps Google and Bing understand the page, and it costs little. But if a page was not being mentioned before, schema was rarely the reason, so fixing it does not start a clock. The fixes that do are in the plan below, and in the seven fixes we make after an audit, in the order we make them.

Schema is housekeeping. It helps machines read the page you already have. It doesn't make that page worth quoting.

The plan

A 12-week plan

Judge at week eight and decide at week twelve, using the mention rate across weekly scans rather than any single answer, because AI answers vary from one run to the next.

WhenDo thisExpect
Week 0Ask your buyer questions on all six engines and record who is named and which pages are cited.A baseline to compare against. Without it you cannot tell what moved.
Week 1Allow the AI search crawlers in robots.txt, fix dead URLs, get content into the initial HTML, and register with Bing Webmaster Tools.Crawler visits within days. OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes reach them within about 24 hours.
Weeks 1 to 2Put question-shaped headings on the page, with a plain answer in the first sentence, tables and real numbers.Live-search engines can pick this up within days on narrow questions; weeks on broad ones.
Weeks 2 to 3Use one name, one description and the same prices on your site, LinkedIn, directories and review profiles.Shows over weeks 6 to 12, once the sources stop disagreeing about you.
Weeks 3 to 12Get named off-site on review platforms for your category, listings, roundups and useful community answers, disclosed. The slowest step, and the one that moves broad questions. Each new mention needs its own crawl.
Weekly throughoutRe-ask the same questions the same way every week, on every engine.A mention rate you can trust. Judge at week eight, decide at week twelve.

If you do not know which of these your site needs, start with the question behind them: why ChatGPT does not recommend your business covers the five usual reasons.

Who we are

How AEOscore tracks it

AEOscore asks your buyer questions on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode every week (every day on Monitor + Strategist), scores every answer, and re-checks every fix you ship at 7 and 28 days, so each fix gets its own before and after. On Monitor + Strategist an in-house strategist and developer makes the fixes for you, so they go live the same month. The log above comes from the same system, run on our own site. How the scoring works is on the methodology page.

FAQ

How long AEO takes: common questions

What moves AI mentions within 12 weeks?
Making your content readable in plain HTML, answering real buyer questions directly on the page, keeping your name and description identical everywhere, and earning fresh third-party mentions on the sites AI engines already cite.
Why did my mentions improve and then disappear again?
AI answers are regenerated each time and vary between sessions, models and regions. Track the mention rate across several weeks rather than reacting to one answer.
Will publishing more content speed it up?
Not on its own. The engines repeat what many independent sources agree on, so in our experience a few mentions on sites the engines already cite do more for a settled question than extra pages on your own site.
How long do answers from a model's training data take to change?
Training-data answers change only when the provider trains and releases a new model, on its own schedule and usually months apart, so plan around the live-search answers and treat training-data movement as a bonus.
Do AI Overviews update as fast as normal Google results?
They draw on the same index, so a page has to be crawled, indexed and eligible for a snippet first, which Google says can take several days to several months, and in our own tracking AI Overviews moved weeks after ChatGPT and Perplexity.
How long does it take with AEOscore?
AEOscore scans weekly on Monitor (£99 a month) and daily on Monitor + Strategist (£1,495 a month), and re-checks every shipped fix at 7 and 28 days, so you see movement as it happens; on Monitor + Strategist an in-house strategist and developer makes the fixes, so they go live the same month.
