PerplexityBot

What is PerplexityBot?

PerplexityBot is Perplexity's index crawler, designed, in Perplexity's words, to surface and link websites in its search results. It respects robots.txt, and Perplexity states it is not used to train AI foundation models. Sites that want to appear in Perplexity's heavily cited answers need this bot to reach them.

Why it matters for AI visibility

Perplexity is the most citation-forward of the major engines: nearly every claim in its answers carries a numbered source link, which makes it disproportionately valuable per user for driving qualified traffic, and makes PerplexityBot access disproportionately valuable per crawl. Because Perplexity explicitly separates its crawling from model training, the usual objection to AI bots, they are harvesting my content to train on, does not apply here by the company's own documentation; blocking PerplexityBot buys no training protection and costs real answer visibility. Perplexity's users also skew towards researchers and considered purchases, people comparing options before spending, which is exactly the audience most businesses want to reach mid-decision. Check your logs for its documented user agent string, and if it has never visited, work out what is stopping it: robots.txt, a firewall rule, or simply nothing worth indexing on the topics its users ask about.
