What is AI citation?

An AI citation is when an answer engine names or links your website as a source for part of its answer. It is stronger than a mention: the engine is treating your content as evidence and sending readers your way. Citations are the currency AEO sets out to earn.

In practice

Why it matters for AI visibility

Citations tell you something mentions cannot: which content the engines trust enough to build answers from. Engines run dedicated crawlers just to find citable sources, OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot exist for exactly this, so a page that answers a real question directly, loads as plain HTML and comes from a credible site has a genuine route into answers. Watching who gets cited for your buyer questions is also the fastest way to see which sources the engines lean on in a market: the same directories, comparison pages and articles come up again and again, and each one is either a target to appear on or a rival to outrank inside the answer. A business with strong citations gets compounding returns, because engines that cite you once have already judged your content usable.

Measurement

How AEOscore measures this

Every AEOscore scan records citations separately from mentions, so you can tell a passing name-check from a page the engine actually built its answer on.
