IndexNow

What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is an open protocol through which a website pings participating search engines the moment a URL is added, changed or removed, instead of waiting to be recrawled. Microsoft Bing, Yandex and several other engines participate; Google does not. One ping notifies every participating engine at once.

Why it matters for AI visibility

IndexNow earns its place in an AEO glossary through a chain worth making explicit: ChatGPT's search draws on Bing among its providers, so Bing's picture of your site helps shape what ChatGPT can find and cite, and IndexNow is the fastest lever on Bing's picture. For years UK businesses have treated Bing as an afterthought on market-share grounds, a habit the AI era quietly broke: optimising your Bing presence is now partly optimising your ChatGPT presence. The push model matters most when freshness does: a price change, a corrected page, new content answering a live question can enter Bing's index in something closer to minutes than weeks, and flow onward to the surfaces that read it. Implementation is nearly free, one hosted key file and an HTTP ping per changed URL, and most mainstream CMSs have it built in or a plugin away. Pair it with Bing Webmaster Tools so you can verify the index reflects what you pushed.
